Ten people are confirmed dead, including eight high school students, after yesterday's fiery bus crash in Northern California. The tour bus was transporting a group of Los Angeles area high school students to a college preview day at Humboldt State University in Northern California.
While the bus was en route, a FedEx truck crossed over the median of the I-5 freeway and into the oncoming northbound lanes, colliding head-on with the bus. Both drivers were killed.
The bus burst into flames on impact, and was so severe, that people as far as a quarter mile away could hear it. Investigators are currently looking into what could have caused the driver of the FedEx truck to veer out of his lane and into oncoming traffic. So far, theories include mechanical failure, falling asleep at the wheel, and some have suggested that the driver could have swerved to avoid an accident in the southbound lane.
At the scene, emergency personnel identified nine people who were killed, although they have not positively ID'd each victim. Another individual was airlifted to a nearby hospital but died shortly after, putting the death toll at ten. In addition to the ten deaths, 30 were taken to the hospital with injuries.
Stern Law Group's thoughts and prayers are with the victims and their families in the aftermath of this tragic accident.
